SITKA

Use the Travel Planner off to the right to glimpse what awaits you in Sitka, Alaska! From accommodations, fishing charters and sightseeing tours, to sea kayaking and native art.

Enjoy building a most memorable experience in this fine town.

Sitka is located on Baranof Island, surrounded by a cluster of small-forested islands. Sitka's Mount Edgecumbe shadows Sitka and looks majestic as it rises 3,200 feet. Sitka hosted the Tlingit natives long before it became known as the capital of Russian-America until its transfer to the U.S. in 1867.

Established in 1910 is Sitka National Historical Park and is Alaska's oldest federally designated park, which was established in 1910, to commemorate the 1804 Russian and Tlingit Battle. The park boasts a large collection of indoor and outdoor totem poles.

In the center of town topped by its onion-shaped dome is St. Michael's Cathedral. It was the first Russian church built in America (1844-48), destroyed by fire in 1966, rebuilt and today displays precious icons and religious artifacts saved by a human-chain from the buring fire.

Folk dances can be scene preformed by The New Archangel Dancers which delight audiences with their lively folk dances of Russia and help preserve Sitka's Russian heritage.

Native performances of ancient songs and dance passed down from Tlingit ancestors can be seen performed by Sheet'ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi Dancers. See the dancers perform with narration and interpretation in traditional vibrant regalia at their traditional style Tlingit Clan house.

The Alaska Raptor Center is located in Sitka and is known for its outstanding rehabilitation and educational campus for the bald eagle as well as other raptors.

Sitka Sound's pristine waters are abundant with fish, giant humpbacks, sea otters, soaring eagles, wide-eyed harbor seals and sea lions. As in all communities a wealth of nature can be found!
