Prudhoe Bay

Prudhoe Bay lies at the very tip of Alaska’s most northern border. It sits on the edge of the Artic Ocean. If you’re interested in the hoity-toity gift shop, big town feel of Anchorage or Juneau, Prudhoe Bay is NOT the place for you. Prudhoe Bay is a small town built around the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, which starts there, winds 800 miles throughout Alaska and ends in Valdez. If you’re really into oil or the oil industry, then stop in Prudhoe Bay, because it is the largest oil producer in America. The area is set up mostly for work and contains lodging, but not entirely a tourist trap.

It isn’t all work and no play however. Prudhoe Bay is also an awesome place to see real, untouched Alaskan wildlife. If you are a wilderness or animal photography buff, consider visiting Prudhoe Bay. It is visited several times a year by one of the largest caribou herds in North America. During the long summer evenings, the views on the long 900 mile drive from Anchorage are beautiful. An ideal spot to catch a bit of solitude.
